Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:3885077 |
Small early 19th sampler by Elizabeth Newby - 1837. Worked in wool on gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a small crown motif to finish. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central carnation flanked by a heart, dog, rose, bird and two crowns. Elizabeth's name and the date of October 1837 are stitched beneath then th...e whole piece is surrounded by a floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some areas of faint staining. Some shades of the wool have mellowed from their original vibrancy and there is also some slight bleeding to areas of the stitch work. There is some stitch loss to the word October and the odd stitch missing elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah Ann first stitched it. Measures 12 1/4" x 6 3/4"
