This intriguing specimen is one of the single most unusual and truly fascinating specimens I've ever come across from the Blue Forest digs. There is a LOT that is unusual about this piece, and the closer you look, the more of a mystery it becomes! At first glance it's an attractive specimen with a thick coating of agate around the log and a huge algae cast. These casts form around the logs before they petrify and are part of the environment in the swampy lake that hel...ped preserve them. It's as beautiful as it is interesting, both colorful and perfectly detailed - they don't get much better and they certainly don't get any more interesting! This is a a great example to show how these logs formed and what environment helped to preserve them. In the vast majority of cases, weathering has caused the algae cast to break away from all or part of the log and few are found fully framed like this. This really is a unique collector piece that prepared properly to provide both visual enjoyment and scientific study! It's a gorgeous phenomenon preserved in stone, polished to a mirror finish, ready to display in your collection. Here's an absolutely museum grade Blue Forest petrified round cut from the center of a uniquely formed log. There's a lot of brilliantly colored blue agate filling the void that once contained a decaying log. The usual wood grain is preserved in a coffee color agate that is itself framed in a gorgeous blue agate! The color is complemented by a thick, buff colored fossil algae frame. The Blue Forest is a uniquely preserved bed of small branches and occasional logs in central Wyoming. The digging is hot and dusty, but every once in a while you stumble on a real treasure and this little log is one of them! The dark, blue/black, coffee and chocolate colors the wood is preserved in are characteristic of these specimens, as are the infusions of blue agate that filled the cracks and coated the log! This is a perfectly flat slice from the center of a much larger than average sized log from this ancient forest. It's been cut and polished to show off all the gemmy detail from this 50 million year old treasure captured inside. It took a pretty awesome polish - something we strive to produce on every specimen we put our name on! Much larger than most Blue Forest rounds, this one measures about 6 1/4" x 4 3/4" across the polished face and is sliced roughly 0.44" thick. Weight is 0.86 lbs.
