Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Raves -  1830. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a row of triangulated alphabet letters with a tree between each set of letters and the verse - The Saint's Sweet Home - beneath, its six stanzas divided by a narrow zigzag line. The title of the verse has two trees, a fruit basket and two birds on either side whilst the verse can be seen in the ...second photograph. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Eve has a dog and carnation motif at her side, the latter with a bird standing on either side plus a bird standing on each of its side blooms, a small bird in flight by the bird on the left. Adam has a stag and rose motif at his side, the latter stitched with the same birds as on the carnation next to Eve with the addition of a dog standing to its right side. There is a pair of hovering cherubs holding a crown above the carnation and rose motifs, each with a squirrel and two birds at their sides. Ann's name and the date of September 22nd 1830 run across the bottom edge of the linen, then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering carnation border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some patches of faint staining and a small dark stain beneath the stag next to Adam. There is a very small area of damage to the left of the last two lines of the verse on the left side of the linen and several areas in the lower section, the largest being in the left corner. The damage has resulted in a small amount of stitch loss in the border running along the bottom edge and also the word September. One is able to see through the damage that the sampler seems to be sitting directly on top of card. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is slight bleeding to the words of the verse and colour running to some shades of the silk in the lower section which looks as though it could be the result of water damage. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original rosewood frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with age related minor cracking to the veneer and a small area of old veneer loss to all four corners, larger on both right side corners.  Measures 12 1/2" across x 12"  (sight size) and 17 1/4" x 16 3/4" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
