SMALL MID 19TH CENTURY VERSE, MOTIF& QUOTATION SAMPLER BY AGNES HARDY - 1856

Small mid 19th century sampler by Agnes Hardy - 1856. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The field of the gauze has been stitched with a central framework which contains the following three stanza verse

The gauze above the verse is stitched with a central cushion bearing two crossed sceptres flanked by a beehive, its occupants buzzing around and about. The sides of the verse are stitched with a meandering floral swag whilst the last line of the third stanza has Agnes' name, that of her school - Broadwey School - and the date of 1856 beneath flanked by a fruit basket. The gauze outside the framework is worked with the biblical quotation - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Psalm CXIX 105 - with a floral motif in each of the upper corners and a cross in each of the lower.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places and grubby around the edges. The colours of the thread are good with some small areas of thinning to the red stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Agnes first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.
