Mid 19th century unfinished sampler by Jane Underhill - 1869. Jane tells us that she worked her sampler at the British Free School in Lisbon so it would appear that she was schooled in Portugal. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers, Roman numerals and border patterns with the words - We love him because he first loved us - at t...he end of the second row. The middle section of the gauze is divided into three portions with a bible in the middle portion which has its title stitched on either side and a verse above and below. The other two portions contain biblical quotations with two stones bearing the Ten Commandments in the left side portion and a crucifix in the portion to the right. The middle portion is underlined with a meandering floral border whilst the left portion has a pair of crowns with Faith and Crown stitched to their left and right (Faith Crowns All) The majority of the lower section of the gauze is blank, but there is a cross entwined with flowers stitched at the centre (below the floral border underlining the bible verse) with an anchor to its right side with the words Christ is my... above it (Christ is my Anchor) and a house beneath the right side portion of the gauze containing biblical quotations. There is a central fruit and flower basket stitched on the bottom edge of the gauze with a lion and floral motif to its left and right and Jane's details stitched beneath - Jane Underhill. Worked this sampler at the British Free School. 1869. Lisbon -  then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering double floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges with some small patches of faint staining. The colours of the thread are good with some slight bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Jane first stitched it.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 23 1/2" across x 23"
