Oyster plate by Union Porcelain Works (U.P.W.) with patent date (1881)
Press-molded porcelain with painted decoration and gildingApproximately 6.5 (H) x 8.5 (W)"
This plate was used to serve shucked oysters. Its overall shape playfully suggests serving oysters on a clam shell. There are 4 "oyster" impressions for placing the oysters, and 1 shaped like a scallop shell (perhaps for a sauce).
On the plate's surface, a bed of seaweed is mold...ed in relief, along with various shells, a lobster claw and a crab. This "clam bake" scene is painted in blue, red, and yellow with overall vivid pink shading and gilding in places. 
Marks on the back:1. U.P.W. logo with eagle in black2. The mark of the decorating shop ("Union Porcelain Works Greenpoint N.Y.") in yellow3. "Patent Jan. 4 1881"
This plate was made by the important American company, Union Porcelain Works, located in Greenpoint, New York.
