The... blade represents the opportunity to own a historic Kotowakizashi, ca. 1300s-1400s, from the well-known Yamato tradition. Theblade and the mountings are in NearMINT condition. The sword has a blade length of 15.75 inches (40 cm). Thesword shows a smaller ko-kissaki and has been shortened, indicatingthe sword was previously a tachi, theold long sword used on horseback ca. 1200-1400s. It features horimono, or carvings in the form of koshi-hiand goma-bashi, or short grooves, on either side of the blade. The hada isa very well-implemented and visible wood-grain itame hada that sits on top of a vibrant masame hada. Thehamon is a well-implemented Yamato-style gunomemidare hamon. The hamon is present the length of the blade through thekissaki ending in a hakikake boshi.There are activities like sunagashi in and along the hamon.The tang is mumei, or unsigned. Based on the workmanship, the sword looks to be froma school related to the Yamatotradition, possibly Tegai or Shikakke schools which were active fromlate 1300s into early 1400s. A shinsa should be consulted as final authority.The blade comes in shirasaya mountings. They are in Near MINT condition. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, andfew scratches. There are a couple small lateral wares and a little loose grainnear the mune. There do not appear to be any major flaws like hagire.Given the condition, the craftsmanship, and history of the sword, I think this piece would be an outstanding additionfor a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.Terms and additional items: This item is original and not aknockoff or fake.
