A Nice Antique Original 18th Century Brass Mortar and Pestle Set with Great Turned Designs!Wonderful original condition on this circa 1750-1800 Mortar and Pestle set, just as seen in "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" by Nuemann (the reference in said book points to these as being earlier into the 17th century though this example with its turnings is more to the American Colonial period)Mortar and Pestle sets of the brass variety are most commonly associated with medicine, various chem...icals and powders being crushed and combined to make pills, pastes, etc. They would of course also have been used in homes to grind various spices and salts, if ones home could have afforded the cost to procure an example made of brass. Some age lines on the body of the piece, slight remains of some mortar (stone) on the underside (of the brass mortar) though overall VG- condition with a great aged patina. Mortar Stands approximately 3 3/4 " tall with a flared top rim of 4 7/8". Pestle measures 8". Great Patina on both the Mortar and Pestle! Please take a moment to view the images and you'll see the wonderful original construction and patina. Just a fine mid 18th century set, offered of a period of only FIVE days with no reserve.
