Superb and very rare historical collectible from the Tontine Hotel that was built by William Hamilton and became well known for its Trontine Heads..statuary the adorned the building...and known locally as the "Hottie" as the place where rich tobacco and textile merchants gathered as well as community leaders would meet and just the place to be! In 1781, the Tontine Society raised funds and opened a coffee shop, society room and hotel in Trongate (Glasgow) and was named after their "lea...der" Lorenzo Tonti...the Trontine enjoyed a tremendous success and reputation throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, however, it was destroyed by fine in 1911....this area in Glasgow is now a tremendous business center with much information on line about its features and history...The Edinburgh Gazette was a government based newspaper...this page can be seen both front and back due to its professional framing...the frame is wood, old, but age of the ornate beaded wood frame is unknown...this piece is an estate find and would guess traveled (framed or unframed) to the US via family ancestry in some time past...and kept all these years.
The page shows the Tontine stamp mark...signifying property of the Tontine coffee room...and was well read...there is also the price mark as shown to lower right corner (at least I think that is what the mark represents)...the text deals primarily with dissolution of business partnerships and bankruptcies...the first article, however, concerns the Lord Chamberlains Office..Ready to hang and enjoy
