A HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF JOHN MILTON'S WORKS IN FINE GILT PRIZE LEATHER BINDING FROM THE PRESTIGIOUS HARROW SCHOOL, PRESENTED TO CHARLES ROBERT FLETCHER LUTWIDGE, COUSIN AND FELLOW ARTIST TO LEWIS CARROLL!
This thorough collection includes not only ‘Para...dise Lost’ and the other major works, but the sonnets, odes, translations, and more. It is also interleaves with numerous fine copperplates by Martin, Westall and Fuseli, as shown. A truly towering figure, Milton remains one of the most celebrated and analyzed poets in English literature. Dryden described ‘Paradise Lost’ as ‘one of the greatest, most noble and sublime poems which either this age or nation has produced, ’ while Blake, keying in on the poem’s heretical implications, described Milton as ‘a true Poet, and of the Devil’s party without knowing it.’
Bound in stunning emerald green morocco prize binding from the Harrow School, with gilt inset borders, cornered and capped with gilt crossed arrows at the corners, gilt turn-ins; the spine with gilt ruled compartments decorated in additional Harrow arrow designs as well as a gilt titled compartment, as shown. Marbled page edges and endpapers as well. Binding lightly rubbed, as shown. Pages within lightly foxed, very well preserved. Unmarked lest for Prize Bookplate to Charles Robert Fletcher Lutwidge on the front pastedown, a presentation and prize from the Harrow School; Lutwidge later became mayor of Tunbridge Wells, and, most interestingly a painter with a close connection to his cousin, Charles Lutwidge Dodson, whom went by Lewis Carroll, who mentions him numerous times in his personal diaries. Measures 8.25" x 5.5". A very bright and handsomely bound fine printing of Milton, with great associations and provenance.
