LARGE MID/LATE 19TH CENTURY NEEDLEPOINT OF A SPANIEL IN A RURAL SETTING - C. 1860
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:78075 |
The gauze which is visible has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some minor fraying around the edges. The colours of the wool are good, albeit not quite as bright as when this piece was originally made. There is also the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. This photograph also shows an old patch repair above the spaniel's head. If one looks at the front of the needlepoint, one is able to see that this area has been torn at some point of time. It has been stitched then the patch applied to keep that area stable. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are several large splits in the sky area, the largest being approximately eight inches long and some much smaller splits elsewhere. PLEASE NOTE - This is a large piece measuring 39 1/2" x 29 3/4"
DUE TO THE SPLITS IN THE SKY AREA I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT HANDLING OF THE NEEDLEPOINT BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM UNTIL IT IS BEHIND GLASS AND FRAMED. ALSO, IF HANDLING IS NECESSARY, I WOULD ADVISE IT BE PICKED UP BY THE CORNERS ON THE SHORTER SIDES AND NOT ON THE TOP EDGE AS THIS MAY CAUSE FURTHER SPLITTING TO OCCUR.
