Hey drummers. Today I have an interesting drum for you. It's a Ludwig "Jazz Festival" 5x14 wooden snare - in major player's condition! Yes, the same style as Ringo Starr of the Beatles....but this is not Ringo's actual drum! The good: It's a 5x14 shell, 8 bowtie lugs (magnets barely stick - brass?), has a pre-serial Ludwig badge, has a P83 throw, has a P32 butt plate (60's script), and is done in black oyster pearl finish.... White painted interior with no date. 15 of 16 tension rods are the same with no washers but the last one is modern one with a loose washer, so I assume 15 are originals??? All 16 bowtie screws are hex and look original with washers, but one of them is broken and glued to the washer, and the washer to the shell (I have an extra vintage chrome bowtie lug I will throw in so you can swap this lug out if the mount screw is broken inside the lug). The wires have clear plastic tips, have Patent #2517124 stamped on them, and are 20 wires - they look like other vintage Ludwig wires I've seen. The chrome on the butt plate, throw and lugs is in very good condition. The bearing edges are thick and rounded and remind me of my early 60's Slingys, but they do have some sort of edge on them so they are not fully round, and they are in good condition. The badge is centered in the middle of the drum (equator) and not higher up like newer reissue drums. The wrap has no extra holes in it. The bad: Both hoops are light and steel (magnet sticks) and they don't look like Ludwigs (compared to my '69 Acro). There is no muffler on the drum but you can see the 2 muffler holes that look filled in and painted over on the inside. Also, there are 2 holes that are about the width of the butt plate, and are filled in and painted over, but on the panel next to the butt plate? Also, there is a large hole (maybe 1/2") on the shell in the middle of the throw, and filled in and painted over (maybe a Super Classic conversion?). Also, in that picture, you will note a gap under the upper left washer/lug screw - I opened it up and the hole is well bigger than the screw and what a typical hole should be. The P83 throw sticks which is annoying (should be just a dab of oil to fix)! Where the wrap overlaps, the upper section is a little unglued, but it is intact. The badge grommet looks wrong and the back of it is not crimped or flared out vertically (like on my '65 Supra), and the badge appears glued to the shell. In sample pics I found online, the throw is one panel to the right of the badge, but on this one, it is two. It's a very light drum weighing 2585g (or about 5 lb. 11 oz). The mounting screws and nuts on both the throw and butt plate appear newer. I don't see much of a snare bed on the snare side. *****THE WRAP IS NOT ORIGINAL - I understand it is a newer version of the Black oyster pearl (age unknown) and not original vintage. Also, it comes with top and bottom heads (top Evans J1 coated; bottom clear Emperor snare side) but both are shot and need replacement. Based on the parts, I believe it is a 1960's snare but I am not 100% sure. There is no date inside. It looks good and sounds good with a nice vintage woody tone, and will make a nice piece for any drum collection! The snare is sold AS IS WHERE IS, with no returns or refunds.
