Terrific and early letter written in 1878 by an Indian Trader in at the Cheyenne River Agency in Dakota Territory (now South Dakota) - the writer was Robert Caton - originally from Plainfield, Illinois (southwest of Chicago near Joliet). He writes home about business conditions at the Agency, how much money he has tied up in furs and hides purchased from Native Americans, how he buys cider syrup and sells at a profit, the soldiers flock in every day for lunch an...d buy the cider and lunch, he gets a good deal of the soldier's business, writes about Indians that he trades with, how the goods he buys are shipped from Yankton via wagon etc etc....
