Another remarkable Dakota Territory letter written February 5, 1884 by Robert Caton, an Indian Trader with the Cheyenne River Agency. Caton was from Plainfield, Illinois (near Joliet and Chicago) and wrote this letter to his mother back home. He writes about buying a steer from an Indian, taking it across the Missouri River, riding horseback, they stayed with an Indian named White Swan (he spells out the Indian name!), writes about their log cabin, describ...es the Indian and says he can't eat beefsteak but sticks to venison, makes tea from a plant, "the only thing he likes from the whites is flour and tobacco, and he is a terrible smoker, as the last thing I heard that night was the suck of his pipe and that was the first thing I heard in the morning...." describes the Indian washing his kids with soap, wearing moccasins etc etc.....FULL SCANS provided for your research benefit.TERMS$3.00 postage in the United States.
