Early/mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1835 or slightly later. Worked by an anonymous hand, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section is stitched with a central rosebush which has a fruit basket and carnation urn to its right and a delightful... rose basket, lion, bird and flower to its left. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central house which has trees around its annexed buildings and a bird to the left of its roof. There is a rosebush and flower to the left of the house and a diamond motif, windmill, rosebush, goblet, bird and flower to the right. The bottom edge of the linen is stitched from left to right with two dogs, a crown, two birds, a butterfly, a very cute red stag, flower and crown. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining and a very small area of damage in the first G on the top row of letters. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. This photograph also shows some remnants of old paper along the bottom edge of the linen from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 13 1/4" x 13 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
