Early/mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Mary Stirton aged 19 - 1833. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section contains the names of Mary's parents - James Stirton and Helen McDonald followed by sets of family initials with Mary's name and age to finish. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central-ish tw...o storey house which has a floral motif, bird and dog to its left and a row of three floral motifs with two birds to its right. There is a fruit basket above the house with a strawberry and open tailed peacock on each side with a tree near the right side peacock with a man and woman standing beneath its branches and the date of 1833 worked in red beneath. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a light crease running through Mary's name. The colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it.
