Early/mid 19th century sampler by Sarah E Dixon aged 11 - 1843. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, this sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit basket which has a large bird above and three smaller birds down each side. The birds on the left have a flower basket and row of six spotted dogs at their side whilst the birds on the right have a floral urn by their side. The middle section of the ga...uze is stitched with an impressive two storey house with attic rooms and foliage growing on its side walls. There is a rose urn and two birds to the left of the house and a floral motif surrounded by four birds to the right. Sarah's details and the date of 1843 are stitched beneath the house and are a bit tricky to read due to the colour of thread Sarah used. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower basket which has a dog standing on either side of its topmost bloom and a crown to each side of the basket itself. There is a floral urn next to each crown, the one on the left having two dogs down its left side and two birds to the right of its topmost bloom. The urn on the right has three dogs and two birds on its right side and a single bird on its left. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a couple of very small dark marks in the lower left section and a very small area of damage on the top left side edge. The colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in stitch loss to the tips of the flowers on the outer floral border and some minor fraying.Measures 17 1/2" across x 16 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
