Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Christina Russell. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, sets of family initials and border patterns with Christina's name worked in red on the penultimate row. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a row of numbers with four crowns to their... side then followed by a row of elaborately worked letters. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a two rows of alphabet letters which has five trees below with a dog and three deer amongst them. There is a central three storey house beneath which has a lawned area to the front and a fruit tree to its left and right. Each tree has a bird on either side of its topmost branches, then the whole piece in surrounded by an arcaded floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining, and the colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Christina first stitched it.Measures 12 1/4" x 17" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
