Mid 19th century Scottish sampler by Mary Grieve - 1844. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The top edge of the linen is stitched with Mary's place of residence - Co Path (an abbreviated form of Cockburnspath) and the date of 3 July 1844. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are then stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a small man standing at the end of the last row. The lower section... of the gauze is stitched with two rows of family initials with a kettle motif to the right of the last row. There is a charming two storey house beneath with a floral urn, rose motif and crown to either side, a set of family initials beneath each crown. There is a tree behind the house flanked by a heart, with a deer by the heart on the left and a dog by the one on the right. Mary's name and the letters RAB are then stitched across the bottom edge of the gauze. The gauze has minor overall discolouration and the colours of the wool are very good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it.Measures 8 1/4" x 17" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
