Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by F.C*** - 184*. The stitch work for the name of our stitcher has all but disappeared with just those two letters being legible. Her age is also virtually indecipherable but it is a single digit which makes her under ten years of age. The last digit of the date is also missing but this may have been done by F.C herself at a later date so as not to reveal her true age. This sampler is completely charming with fairly neat stitch work througho...ut. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters followed by two rows of family initials which have a row of numbers beneath, whilst the middle section of the linen contains three rows of larger letters underlined with a zigzag border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a charming two storey purple house which has a blue roof and flowers beneath its ground floor windows. There is a floral urn to the right of the house which has a fruit basket on each side. F.C's details and the date of Dec'r 11 184* are stitched below the house then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, and the colours of the wool are good with a fair amount of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched.Measures 9 1/2" x 16 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
