MID 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY AGNES HUTCHISON - C. 1850

Mid 19th century sampler by Agnes Hutchison. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1850 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with three rows of family initials in and amongst. The lower section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with the biblical quotation - Jesus said... suffer little children to come unto me - with a fruit basket to each side and Agnes' name beneath. There is a charming two storey house beneath Agnes' name which has a pair of crowns over its roof with a key and floral motif by the left side crown and a strawberry basket by the crown on the right. The house has a strip of grass on either side of its steps, each with two trees on it, the trees on the left with three rabbits between them whilst those on the right have two rabbits and a dog between them. The trees have a fruit basket and bird to the left and right of their foliage and an open tailed peacock above. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with remnants of old paper around the edges. The colours of the wool are good with some shades having mellowed more than others over the years, and some minor bleeding to areas of the green stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Agnes first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are the paper remnants plus small visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked and glued onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 17 1/2" x 17 1/2"
