Mid/late 19th century Welsh sampler by Alice Thomas aged 10 - 1876. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle section of the gauze are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section contains Alice's details, her place of residence - Canton. Cardiff - and the date of 1876, all underlined with a deep honeysuckle border. The gauze has overall discolouration ...consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a few stains, some more noticeable than others. The colours of the thread are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Alice first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage within the stain below the last flower of the honeysuckle border. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. Measures 12 1/2" x 16" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
