Small mid/late 19th century needlepoint picture c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this little wool work is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The scene is a charming one of a rural scene in which a young boy is galloping along on his horse, one hand on the reins whilst his other raised hand waves his hat. The boy's pet dog runs alongside keeping pace with the speedy pair. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a w...ater stain in the upper right quadrant and a smaller but darker stain to the middle of the left edge. The needlepoint is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The needlepoint is contained within its seemingly original rosewood frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with their age. There is also a small area of veneer loss on the lower left side corner as can be seen in the penultimate photo. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and shows a later backing card. The needlepoint has been taken out of the frame at some time in the mid 20th century for the original glass to be replaced with a non-reflective one. Measures 10" x 8 1/4" (sight size) and 13 1/4" x 11 1/2" including the frame. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING.
