Small mid/late 19th century needlepoint - c.1870 or slightly later. Worked in wool, presumably on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The sand coloured background frames a winsome scene of a rural setting in which two young girls, probably sisters, are standing on a country track, both wearing the same outfit with the exception of their shoes - one girl is wearing blue shoes whilst the other is wearing red. The girl to the right is hol...ding a ribbon loosely in her right hand which is tethering a bird but enabling it to fly. The girls are framed by an arched tree which has a cottage to its left, its pathway leading down to bushes and shrubs. The needlepoint is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The needlepoint is contained within its seemingly original frame which has a burr maple hand painted finish and gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the frame having some age related rubbing with some scratches and a small amount of veneer loss on the top right corner and another on the right side of the bottom edge. There is also a neat old repair on the upper left side and an repair on the bottom edge of the gilt slip.Measures 8 3/4" across x 9 1/4" (sight size) and 12" x 12 1/4" including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
