Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Sarah Butcher aged 12 - 1816. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper secotin of the linen is stitched with an impressive Solomon's Temple with a bird standing on each of its towers, a diamond to each side of the central bird and a star to the side of each bird on the outermost tower. The temple's name is stitched to the left and right of its steps with Sarah's details and the date of 1816 beneath... which have a flower to their left and a bird to their right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a tall floral motif which has a bird standing on each of its side blooms, an additional bird by the one on the left, and is then flanked by a rosebush to its left and a smaller floral bush to its right, each with a bird perched on top. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a small stain to the left of the Temple's central tower and a few larger stains in the lower section. The colours of the wool are good with several areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it.Measures 13 3/4" x 16" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
