EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ANN BIRD - 1835

Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Ann Bird - 1835. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which is underlined with a deep carnation border with Ann's details and the date of 1835 beneath

The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central floral urn with a fruit tree to its left and right, a bird perched on top of each then all underlined with a meandering floral border. The lower section of the linen is stitched at the left side with a delightful two storey house which has a floral motif to its side which arches over the blue roof with a row of three birds standing on it. There is a floral urn filled with large blooms to the right side of the house with two red birds standing on its outer blooms. The urn has a flower on either side with a floral motif and bird by the right side flower, a star motif above it. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a small dark stain to the right side of the carnation border and patches of staining caused by certain shades of the thread having bled, most noticeable in the verse area and the floral urn next to the house. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original good quality tiger stripe mahogany frame with gilts slip. Both are in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with their age.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 16" x 18 1/4" (sight size) and 20 1/2 " x 23" including the frame.
