Reference Number: Avaluer:23744333
Original Description:
Two early/mid 20th century samplers. The first is initialled A.K.F and is dated 1930. Worked in a lustrous thread on cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central floral motif which has a stag standing on either side and a rectangular plaque beneath containing the following short verse
Friendship's a name to few confin'dThe offspring of a noble mindA generous warmth which fills the breastA...nd better felt than e'er exprest
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit tree which has a shepherd and his wife standing to its left and right, a sheep to the side of each figure, with what looks like a monkey climbing up the shepherd's leg. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border which has the initials A.K.F at the centre of the border on the top edge and the date of 1930 to the centre of the border on the bottom edge. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with patches of mottled faint staining and remnants of old glue residue around the edges. There is also a split approximately two inches long running between the K and F of the initials on the top edge. The colours of the thread are good. The sixth photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. Measures 10 1/2" x 14"
The second sampler is a gift for Edward and Gwyneth Guinn and was finished in 1938. Worked in wool on a soft cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with the following short verse which is underlined with a strawberry border
This gift my friends to thee I sendIn hope to be approvedI have done my best, I do protestFor ones so dearly loved
The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central house surrounded by trees and a flower garden, whilst the lower section contains Edward and Gwyneth's names, the word Curlew - which may be the name of their house, their place of residence - Newton Ferrers - and the date of 1938. These details have a floral motif to the left and right then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering carnation border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places and the colours of the thread are good. The penultimate photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze are frayed.Measures 10 1/2" x 14 1/2"
