Tell me ye knowing and discerning fewWhere I may find a friend both firm and trueWho dare stand by me when in deep distressAnd then his love and friendship most express
The low...er section of the linen is stitched with a central shaped foliate garland containing Ann's details and the date of 1826. There is a bird standing to the left and right of the garland with a floral spray at their side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker with some visible glue and paper residue around the edges. The colours of the silks are good with some thinning to areas of the red stitch work in the lower section. There is also a small amount of later infill stitching to certain red letters which is very slightly darker. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. This photograph also shows further remnants of paper and glue residue around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 13 1/4" across x 12 3/4"
