MID 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & QUOTATION SAMPLER BY MARY ANN LEES AGE 10 - 1842

Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Mary Ann Lees aged 10 1842. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters and numbers underlined with a zigzag border which has a central fruit tree beneath flanked by a star and bird on a blossom branch. Each bird has two floral motifs beside them with a dog above each of the outermost flowers and a heart to their outer side. The two flor...al motifs to the left have two dogs between them, whilst those to the right have a tree and dog between. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following biblical quotation
Favour is deceitful and beauty is vainBut a woman that feareth the lord she shall be praisedShe looketh well to the ways of her householdAnd eateth not the bread of idleness
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central house which has a bird standing on each end of the lower part of its blue roof and a black bird standing on its apex, a row of the numbers 1 through to 14 to his right side. The house has two trees, a dog and two flowers to each of its walls with Mary Ann's name and the date of Feb'ry 15 1842 stitched below them whilst her age of ten years runs across the bottom edge of the linen. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with an area of faint staining on the top right edge and another in the bottom left corner. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool look good but they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also a small amount of stitch loss to the outer border in the lower right corner. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century frame with gilt slip which is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. The last photo is of the reverse of the frame and shows how its original backing board and fittings have been replaced at some time in the mid/late 20th century.Measures 15 3/4" across x 14 3/4"(sight size) and 19 1/2" x 18 1/2" including the frame.
