ANTIQUE CLAY BRICK, SANFORD BRICK CO, Late 19th Century, Demo Textile Mill complex in Massachusetts. This mill was constructed around 1880s. This brick was found in the area of the boiler/ furnace of the mill. Please note the slight defects in the brick, with slight crack in the brick at the top, some rough edges around the front of the brick. The Sanford Brick company was located in Sanford, North Carolina in an area of great clay deposit...s (from receding glaciers). By 1959, 10 % of all bricks produced in the United States came from Sanford, North Carolina in Lee County, North Carolina. What is unusual is to find a Sanford Brick in a 19th Century Textile Mill complex in Massachusetts. This is most likely due to the huge demand for bricks to build textile mills because steel was not used at the time. A four story textile mill would require up to 20 million bricks and thousands of fir tree boards and posts for the flooring and posts. This brick is for serious brick collectors due to its history.
