Triassic Phytosaur Tooth From Texas
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:4512327 |
This amazing specimen comes from the Triassic Dockum Group, Lubbock Texas area. The tooth is from a Phytosaur, an early archosaur that looks similar to crocodiles but is actually quite different. Phytosaurs were large amphibious predators that roamed and hunted the rivers and lakes during the Triassic. Some phytosaur species could grow to lengths exceeding 30 feet and have jaws with massive 2"-3" teeth!!! Phytosaurs are not dinosaurs b...ut they developed during the dawn of the dinosaurs!
This is a nice tooth from the upper jaw of the phytosaur. Phytosaurs have three basic tooth types: a long tooth at the front of the jaw, keeled robust teeth past the premax, and triangular teeth from the middle to rear of the jaws. The serrations angle upward slightly and make the teeth wickedly sharp on the edges. This particular tooth is almost razor sharp!!! Specimen was collected in early 2019Tooth size: Length = 31 mm. Width at base = 12 mm. You will definitely want this yummy tooth!
