Colorful Triassic Phytosaur Tooth From Texas
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:4653935 |
This specimen comes from the Triassic, Dockum Group, near Lubbock, Texas.
The phytosaurs are part of the archosauria clade which eventually becomes many of the dinosaurs. The phytosaur really looks like crocodiles but is very distantly related only. The environment that housed them is similar to the swamps and river channels where today's crocodiles reside. The phytosaurs shared the waterways with giant salamander-like metoposaurs and ...many other fantastic animals like the spiked aetosaurs!
This tooth is 16 mm long with nice serrations. What makes this tooth amazing is the color!!! Some of the teeth are plain red, black, or even white, but some are a splash of many colors like this tooth. I love it!
