This plate was used to serve shucked oysters. Its overall shape playfully suggests serving oysters on a clam shell. There are 4 "oyster" impressions for placing the oysters, and 1 shaped like a scallop shell (perhaps for a sauce).
On the plate's surface, a bed of vivid yellow se...aweed is molded in relief, along with various shells, a lobster claw and a crab. This "clam bake" scene is painted in violet, red, and yellow with overall green shading and gilding in places.
Marks on the back:1. U.P.W. logo with eagle in black2. The mark of the decorating shop ("Union Porcelain Works Greenpoint N.Y.") in yellow3. "Patent Jan. 4 1881"
This plate was made by the important American company, Union Porcelain Works, located in Greenpoint, New York.
