Tho I am now in younger daysNor can I tell what shall befal(l) meI'll prepare for every placeWhere my growing age shall call me
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral motif with two birds perched on its topmost blooms which have a star above flanked by flowers, trees and birds. The stem of the central floral motif has a dog, fruit basket, heart and flower basket to its left and right, whilst Sarah Jane's name and the date of August 10th 1841 run across the bottom edge of the linen. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a few faint stains. The colours of the wool are good with minor bleeding to some areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah Jane first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few red stitches by the left side bird in the lower section of the linen. These are worked in a different thread to the rest of the piece and may be the work of a different hand possibly undertaken at a later date.Measures 14 1/4" x 16"
