Born in Hingham, Massachusetts, BENJAMIN LINCOLN (1733-1810) was asoldier, politician and first Secretary of War. He was a member of theMassachusetts Legislature (1772-73) and secretary of the Provincial Congress(1775). In 1777, as a major general of continental forces, he contributed tothe American victory at Saratoga, as George Washington’s second in command andformally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown. Leading Washington’ssouthern forces, he withdrew his army into Char...leston, South Carolina, where hesurrendered in May 1779. He was lieutenant governor of Massachusetts (1788) andcollector of the port of Boston (1789-1809), appointed by Washington.One page, 5 x 9 ½ DS B Lincoln, June 1 1804, regarding importation of wine as Port Collector, countersigned by Joseph Wilsonas Inspector, imported by Marblehead, MA, ship owner Henry Garrison.Minor bleed through on verso, but overall veryclean and fine example of early American history by this Washington appointee.Everything we sell is guaranteedauthentic forever to the original buyer.
