He... served at the battle of Quebec, and on the New York frontier at the Battle of Oriskany. He successfully defended Fort Stanwix in the Mohawk Valley against General St. Leger, thus making possible the victory against Burgoyne at Saratoga, and was part of the Sullivan-Clinton campaign against the British Indian allies, He was later put in charge of the defense of the Mohawk Valley where he fought a number of battles against Tory forces and their Indian allies.
