Up for auction is an excellent Challenge Grade Hen Bluebill made by the Mason decoy factory of Detroit, ca. 1910. The decoy is in fine original paint that shows minor wear from use including small rubs to the end of the bill, top of the head and end of the tail along with a few minor paint flakes to the body and head. Lots of nice brush swirl marks are evident in the paint. The neck filler has been replaced with a small bit of touch-up to that area. The speculums are very... strong as is the scalloping around the breast. The glass eyes may be replacements although it is tough to tell for certain. There is a filled age check in the bottom with a tight check that extends up into the breast. There is a bit of touch-up on the lower part of the breast covering part of the filler. There are two very tight age checks on the right side of the back. The decoy is stamped “F.W. SINKS” twice on the bottom and also has “F.W.SI…” stenciled on the bottom as well. There is an inletted round lead weight on the bottom. This is a really fine example of the factory’s better grade decoy production.
