LARGE 18th Early 19th C Antique Iron AXE Goosewing Goose Wing Hatchet Trade
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:65027 |
Often called a "goose wing" axe due to the pattern of the blade.
And what a blade it is. Take a moment to view the individual images and you'll see pictures of the original blacksmith made construction and condition. Note the great decorations that adorn... the piece on both sides. There are series of cresent shaped punch designs on one face, the opposite has full "sunburst" orbs with rays around the edges well as small orb "dot" shapes. The piece almost brings to mind the image of an "executioners" axe with its broad sweeping blade. An axe such as this carried out a variety of functions for an early home. As its beveled on one side, its more a hewing variety.
There is oxidation to the piece on both sides evident of age. Some more notable pitting around the blade edge. One side has some more "blackening"oxidation than the other. Again, please see images.
Has a weight of 4lbs 12 oz!
Blade measures just shy of 18" in length, 18 1/4" in length overall. Socket has a hole in the collar where a nail would have been driven throught to support it on a wooden handle. Socket opening measures 1 1/4" in diameter.
The nicest goosewing we've had in some time - and decorated on BOTH sides!
Again, this great period axe has some pitting from age, though overall in good condition and making for a great original presentation.
