EARLY 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH WELLS AGED 10 - 1828

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Elizabeth Wells aged 10 - 1828. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Elizabeth was just ten years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with a peahen and closed tailed peacock to its left and right, a floral urn to the side of each. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which h...as a fleur-de-lys on each side
On this fair canvass does my needle writeWith love and duty thus I both inditeEach pleasing view, each finish'd line appearsTo show the improvement of my growing yearsWith gratitude to God my heart I raiseThat I were early taught to seek his waysAnd in those lines dear Parents I impartThe tender feelings of a grateful heart
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Two birds are standing on the topmost branches of the Tree with a cherub hovering at their side, each celestial being with two stars above them. Adam has a bird and tall floral motif at his side whilst Eve has a cat and tall floral motif beside her. Elizabeth's details and the date of Oct 13th 1828 are stitched across the bottom edge then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges from where the sampler is over a stretcher. There are a few small stains and some small areas of damage which are barely noticeable as the sampler seems to have been conserved at some point in the mid/late 20th century. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is thinning to areas of the paler stitch work (the lower two flowers in both of the urns to the side of the fruit basket in the upper section being an example) to the petals in the outer floral border, and the odd stitch missing elsewhere. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century gilt effect frame which is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a few small chips to the innermost beaded edge. The last photo is of the reverse of the frame and shows that there is no backing paper or board.Measures 12 1/4" x 16" (sight size) and 14 1/4" x 18 1/4" including the frame.
