Marvelous Native American INDIAN TRADER letter written December 5, 1883 by Robert Caton in Fairbanks, Sully County, Dakota Territory (South Dakota) and sent his parents back in Plainfield, Illinois (we know Robert hailed from Will County near Joliet and Plainfield, southwest of Chicago). He writes about problems finishing up his house, difficulties finding a carpenter, he says the house "isn't a thing of beauty" but it keeps the wind out, his cook stove keeps it... warm, "got a bed in one corner...." water barrel in another corner, each barrel lasts up to 3 weeks, keeps food boxes in another corner, piles the wood underneath, keeps a library shelf, keeps potatoes wrapped in an old tent since he didn't dig a cellar, he fries up beefsteak and spuds for dinner, doesn't have butter so he uses condensed milk as a substitute.... he directs future mail to Fairbanks where he says the stagecoach will stop.FULL SCANS provided for your research benefit.TERMS$3.00 postage in the United States.
