EARLY 19TH CENTURY TEMPLE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZA REYNOLDS - 1836

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Eliza Reynolds - 1836. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with Eliza's name and the date of 1836 contained within a shaped floral border which branches out to the left and right with a fruit basket on each side. The middle section of the linen is contains the following verse
Jesus permit thy sacred name to standAs the first effort of an infant...s handAnd while her fingers on the canvas moveEngage her tender heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear children let her have a partAnd write thy name thyself upon her heart
The verse is underlined with a meandering floral border with a central flower below which has a bird on a blossom branch to each side followed by a rosebud. There is a bird beneath the central flower with a fruit tree and star to its left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with an impressive temple with a domed roof and a bird standing on each of its outer towers with a tree to the side of each. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering oak leaf and acorn border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges where it is over a stretcher with some slight vertical undulation. There is an old, neat repair by the last acorn in the top right corner and a few small areas of damage to the field. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some slight bleeding to the stitch work of the writing. There is also a small patch of something, possibly adhesive on the right side fruit basket by Eliza's name. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original good quality rosewood frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with some veneer loss on the upper left corner edges and the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age. The slip is also in good condition with an old area of loss on the middle of the left side. Measures 12" x 15 1/4" (sight size) and 16 1/4" x 19 1/2" including the frame.
