EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARIA MILSUM - Feb 22nd 1823

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Maria Milsum - 1823. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a row of alphabet letters with a central framed flower beneath flanked by crowns, hearts, diamonds and trees, whilst the middle section contains the following verse

The verse has a fruit basket on either side and is then underlined with a deep strawberry border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with an impressive three storey house with a lawn to the front which has blue railings on each side. There is a group of trees interspersed with stags to the left and a tree with two tiny birds perched on the top left branches to the right, a dog beneath its foliage on the left side and a tulip beneath that on the right. Maria's name and the date of February 22 1823 are stitched beneath then the whole piece is surrounded by an exquisite honeysuckle and flower border with a spray of roses in each of the four corners.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some small faint speckles of staining and some small areas of damage - above the word youth - to the right of the word ease - and in the area around the last two strawberries underlining the verse. These are not too noticeable as the sampler seems to have been conserved at some point of time and is sitting on a similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within an early 19th century bird's eye maple frame, possibly its original, with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks on the frame and some areas of later gold paintwork on the bottom edge slip.Measures 12" across x 13" (sight size) and 14 1/2" x 15 1/2" including the frame.
