EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARTHA BEE AGED 16 - C. 1835

Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Martha Bee aged 16. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1835 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a small central floral motif beneath which is flanked by a bird on a bush, stag, tree and bird. There is a central shield b...elow with a lion and unicorn on each side followed by a floral motif, floral urn and standing bird. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse which has a pot containing a tall floral motif to its right side

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a delightful two storey house which has a fruit tree and flower basket on each side of its steep sided roof and a tree plus owl to each side of its ground floor. Martha's name and age are stitched beneath each tree, a bird standing nearby then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby in places with a few small dark marks and some scattered small areas of damage. One is able to see through these areas that the sampler sits upon a backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a good quality rosewood frame with hand carved gilt, possibly its original. The frame is in good condition with a rich colour and a small area of veneer loss to the middle of its outer right side edge which can hopefully be seen on the penultimate photograph. Measures 13" x 15 3/4" (sight size) and 15 3/4" x 18 3/4" including the frame.
