EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZA WELLS AGED 13 - 1823

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Eliza Wells aged 13 - 1823. This little sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a delightful scene of a two storey house with railings on either side those on the left have a black cat standing on them whilst those on the right have a tree behind with a bird perched on top. There is a strip of grass running across the front of the house which has a tree wit...h a bird's nest in its branches on the left side and a fruit tree on the right. Each tree has a floral motif nearby whilst the foliage of each has a small tree and bird on each side. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse which has a rose on either side and is then underlined with an arcaded floral border

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central tulip motif which has a rose basket, floral motif and flower basket on each side, each rose basket with a bird standing on a blossom branch above. This section of stitching is underlined with an arcaded floral border which has Eliza's details and the date of May the 25th 1823 below with a stag and tree to the left and right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with several areas of damage, the largest being around the house. One is able to see through these damaged areas that the sampler has been placed onto a clean backing cloth at some point of time. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some bleeding to areas of the green stitch work and the outer floral border is partially obscured by the frame. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century mahogany frame which has scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, some more noticeable than others. There is also a small old repair on the bottom edge where the veneer has been secured back onto the frame with a tack - this can be seen in the tenth photo. The frame retains its original hanging ring.Measures 11" x 11 1/2" (sight size) and 15 1/2" x 16" including the frame.
