Jesus permit thy gracious name to standAs the first effort of an infants handAnd while her fingers o'er this canvas moveEngage her tender heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear childre...n let her share a partAnd write thy name thyself upon her heart
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a delightful two storey house with foliage on each side of its blue front door, a tree and tall flower basket to its left and a tall floral motif flanked by two smaller ones to its right. Jane's name and the date of December 5 1829 run across the bottom edge of the linen then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with an area of faint staining down the upper left side edge. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also slight bleeding to areas of the black stitching of the words. The sampler is contained within a later, mid 19th century oak frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the frame having the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age.Measures 15 3/4" x 14" (sight size) and 19 1/4" x 17 3/4" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
