EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ANN LINNEY AGED 10 - 1810

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Linney aged 10 - 1810. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a row of alphabet letters and numbers with a central Tree of Knowledge beneath which has a bird standing on top with a crowned cherub hovering on either side of its foliage, each with the following verse by their side

There is a crown to the left and right of the trunk of the Tree of Knowledge with Adam and Eve standing to the side of each followed by a tree motif, stag and rose urn. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket which has a heart above flanked by a blue bird and a rosebush, flower basket, floral urn plus bird and a folly/gatehouse building both having two diamond motifs at their side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central tree lined hill which has an impressive three storey country house standing on top, whilst its sloping sides surround Ann's details and the date of November the 3 1810. The house has a man and his wife standing on either side, with each figure having a tree and carnation basket to their left and right, a dog below each basket. There is a bird on either side of the roof of the house followed by a heart, floral motif and crown. The whole piece is then surrounded by a strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with the odd small dark mark and a couple of dark stains to the side of Adam. The colours of the silks are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage to the linen in the top right corner. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 17 1/4" x 17 1/4"
