MID 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & " ROSE " VERSE SAMPLER BY HARIETT FRANKLING AGED 9 - 1846

Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Hariett Frankling aged 9 - 1846. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Hariett was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with a tree and two floral motifs on either side which have a fruit bush, flower basket, floral motif and two trees above them. The middle section of the linen is stitched wit...h the following verse with Hariett's details and the date of 1846 to finish, a tiny flower basket to their left and right

The title of the verse has a butterfly to its left and right, whilst each side is stitched with an exquisite sinuous rose border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central rosebush with a birds to the left and right of its outer blooms then flanked by a tree, carnation basket, small flower basket, shaped topiary tree and floral motifs. There is a fruit tree with birds beneath the central rosebush which has Hariett's name on either side of its trunk followed by a sailing ship with a figure standing on deck. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with some patches of faint staining and general undulation. There are several very small, barely noticeable areas of damage and a larger area around Hariett's first name. One is able to see through the damage that the sampler has been placed onto a backing cloth at some point of time. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see its reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original stained oak frame which is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. The frame retains its original top hanging rings but has been strung at a later date.Measures 11 1/4" x 15 1/4" (sight size) and 16" x 20" including the frame.
