Early 19th century sampler by Elizabeth? The area beneath the Tree of Knowledge is where the details of who stitched this sampler and the date it was finished once were, but these have disappeared. I've held the sampler up to the light and can just about make out what appears to be the name Elizabeth but I'm unable to read any other details. Worked in silk on a sheer gauze, this sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitche...d with a central fruit basket which has a floral motif plus bird on each side followed by a charming two storey house. There is a crown above the fruit basket which has a floral urn, tree, star and flower to its left and a floral urn, tree bird and flower to its right. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure has a goose, stag, floral motif and crown by their side with a female figure holding a parasol above them, her dog nearby. There is a pair of birds over the top of the Tree of Knowledge with an open tailed peacock and bird on either side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower bowl with a lion, bird and flower basket on either side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges. The colours of the silks are good with several areas of stitch loss and some bleeding to the darker shades. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are areas of damage around the edges of the gauze and a few small areas to the field. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage to the field would be less noticeable. There are also remnants of old paper and visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued and tacked onto a stretcher at some point of time.
