Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:3831048
Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler, possibly Scottish. The name Edward Morton is stitched across the top left edge of the linen with the name Janet to the right followed by what is likely to be her surname. I am unable to decipher it as the letters don't make a name - GRWNILY?- perhaps her surname has been abbreviated. I think it is possible that Janet was Edward's wife or wife-to-be and this could possibly be their marriage sampler. Although undated, the style of stitch wo...rk would indicate this piece dates to c.1820 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. As mentioned, Edward and Janet's names are stitched across the top edge of the linen with a row of alphabet letters beneath underlined with an arcaded floral border. This is then followed by two splendid carnation urns with a tulip to their right side. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a deep arcaded rose border with a crown to their top right and lower left, the latter with a bird standing above it. There is a row of family initials beneath the second and third roses with a bird standing above the first set, followed by for further sets to the left side of the linen, a crown above each. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. There is a small flower, flower basket, tulip and bird to Adam's side whilst Eve has  two floral motifs and a tulip next to her with a stretch of grass above which has a floral motif with an open tailed peacock to its left and right. The linen has overall discolouration consistent, quite dark with patches of staining around the edges. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. Measures 12 3/4" x 17" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
