And why take ye thought for raiment Consider the lilies of the fieldHow they grow, they toil notNeither... do they spinAnd yet I say unto you that even SolomonIn all his glory was not arrayed like one of theseMatthew VI xxviii - xxix~~~~~~~~There is a lesson in each flowerA story in each stream and bowerOn every herb o'er which we treadAre written words which, rightly readWill lead us from earth's fragrant sodTo hope and holiness and God
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with Mary Jane's name, that of her school - Cwmbach School - and the date of 1867. The words have a flower on either side and a meandering floral swag beneath, then the wohle piece is surrounded by a deep floral border with a rose each corner. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, and the colours of the thread are good with the pink used for certain flowers having mellowed to a much paler hue. There is also some bleeding to the black stitch work of the words, and some thinning to certain letters. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Jane first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and some minor damage around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 12 1/2" x 16 3/4"
